In the Drawer: The Eye

John's 19th-century eye image has found a home on his book cover, decoupage, totes, matchboxes, collaborations with Astier de Villatte, and more.

It comes from an Anatomical Manikin, a late-19th to early-20th-century medical "flap book" or physiological chart. Historical medical pieces like this were referred to as folding physiological manikins. They were made of stiff cardboard or heavy paper plates bound inside a folder, featuring beautifully detailed, multi-layered chromolithograph illustrations of human anatomy.
